From childhood to the present day, the augmentation of reality by technological advancement has become more and more ubiquitous, and rapidly continues to climb towards an apex of seamless integration; a perfect synchrony between human ingenuity and technological optimization.

At our best, we humans are everyday improvisers, flowing and imperfect. We do not possess the computational power to explore every potential and select the most optimal one in a fraction of a second. It is this tension between human authenticity and optimization through technological integration that we aimed to explore in the Synchrony Experiments — a series of improvisations augmented in real time using a variety of effects, electronics, studio techniques, MIDI triggers, and unlikely signal paths to create music that could neither be made by human or technology alone. These long-form improvisations were then refined into shorter pieces of music that distilled most clearly the musical ideas being explored.

The presence of technological intervention in real time led us to play in ways that took us out of our muscle memory and directly into the present moment. This augmented reality may have seemed exploratory to us, but it becomes increasingly easier to imagine a not-too-distant future where an environment of this sort becomes normalized and seamless.
